Lazy Monday

I have a couple days off.  Today I am trying to get out and accomplish a bunch of projects to make up for yesterday which I spent veging out in front of the TV.  No, seriously.  I spent all day watching TV.  I watched the Fall finale of Heroes.  It was pretty good. (spoiler alert)  There were some good resolutions that should push a few of the characters into a new stage of their lives.  Hiro faced his greatest enemy and won.  HRG returned to the company.  I wonder what Peter and Micah will do without their respective brother and mother around anymore?  I have to admit, I saw both of those deaths coming.  When Nathan took to the stage at the press conference, I thought, “Well that’s the end of him.”  I recorded the second part of Tin Man, but I haven’t watched it yet.  The first part was OK.  The guy playing the Tin Man is particularly good.  And the sorceress is super-hot, which always works for me.  Normally I like Zooey Deschanel.  However, she is so contemporary that any fantastical lines she has to say always rings false to me.

I spent most of the day watching some DVDs that I bought recently but haven’t had the chance to enjoy.  They were-

Superman Returns- I know a lot of people didn’t like this.  They thought it was boring.  They were confused by the whole “returns” part.  I liked it.  Brandon Routh was really good.  Of course Spacey was great as a more angry, mean Lex Luthor.  And that title sequence.  When those block lettered titles zoomed in and the John Williams score from the Donner films (I don’t count 3 or 4) started playing, I almost had another pee pee accident in my seat.  That being said, there were some flaws that need to be addressed.  Let’s face it, Kate Bosworth was just awful.  She has been good in other movies.  Just not this one.  And the Superman/Lois little kid angle.  Bleh.  AND Bryan Singer played up the Superman as Jesus thing way to much.  You know, it starts with a voice from the heavens telling us he is sending his son to save us.  Then after he pushes the Kryptonite rock into space he falls back into the standard “Jesus on the cross” pose.  Afterward he “dies” but then he comes back.  He even gets stabbed in the rib, the same place Jesus was allegedly stabbed with the spear.  Come on now.  I guess I like my messianic fables vague.  You want to see a great Jesus metaphor movie?  Terminator 1 and 2 did it right.

Transformers- This should have just sucked.  But it didn’t.  I don’t trust Michael Bay.  I tolerated him back during the Bad Boys, Armageddon days.  But “Pearl Harbor” was so bad.  I have told people that I equate the film with Michael Bay digging up the bodies of all the people who died at Pearl Harbor and corn-holing each of them individually.  But somehow he did right by Transformers.  It was fun, funny, and fairly consistent with the cartoon.  Changing Bumblebee from a Bug to a Camaro seemed like bullshit to me, but with enough therapy and medication, I’ll get over it.  I thought Shia LeBeouf was really good.  I knew he was going to make it when I saw him in “Holes.” (apparently NOT a porno)  And again Megan Fox = super-hot.  Seriously.  I felt like I should go to church or something after seeing her.  The best decision they made was to bring back Peter Cullen to play the voice of Optimus Prime.  Hearing him say “Autobots.  Roll out.”  That was my childhood.  Congratulations Michael Bay.  You didn’t fuck this up.  That’s kind of sad when the best compliment you can give a director is that they didn’t fuck up a childhood joy of yours.  I can’t say that about that bearded bastard, George Lucas.  He molested my inner child.

Flight of the Conchords-The First Season-I know it’s on cable, but if you haven’t seen this show, stop whatever you are doing and find a way to watch it.  Before I started watching this last summer, I hadn’t laughed so hard at anything in a long time.  The songs are friggin’ brilliant.  Rhys Darby, who plays the Conchords manager, gives an incredible comic performance.  Very very funny.
